How We Landed in Nimbin

In 2023, we packed up our life in Fremantle, WA. We sold almost everything, bought a caravan and set off east. Just like that, we’d officially joined the ranks of the “grey nomads” only, without the grey (ok, I might have been in denial!)

Working online made it possible. Oh boy, it felt liberating. Free. Wanderlust in action. There’s something about being untethered ~ no mortgage, messy plans (I’m a Capricorn, Wick’s a Sagittarius ~ which basically means when it comes to making “plans” I think I’m steering the ship (Cap energy) while he’s out here shooting arrows at the stars (Sag life). Somehow, the plans still get made….but not without a little cosmic tug-of-war) just the road stretching ahead of you like an open invitation.

Our first stop was Kyogle.

The land was lush and rich, the kind of green that makes your lungs expand just by looking at it. But, as sometimes happens, it didn’t work out. We knew we weren’t done with the Northern Rivers though. The land here hums. It calls ♡

Not long after, a job came up in Nimbin ~ a Digital Communications Manager role for both the Nimbin Community Centre and the Nimbin Chamber of Commerce. Remote work, but the idea of being closer to Nimbin tugged at us. So our little company, The Aether Agency, asked: Could we apply as a duo? Between us we had the goods ~ web development, social media, graphic design. They said yes. We said yes. Suddenly, we had jobs in Nimbin. And even though we already had other clients online, this one felt different. This one felt…..meant.

About a month into the roles, a beautiful human asked if we wanted to move onto their land, about 20 minutes out of town. We’d been calling something in ~ some kind of grounding after the Kyogle detour and this felt like the answer. So we moved onto the land at Mount Burrell.

Primitive doesn’t even cover it. We built a toilet out of a rubbish bin. Our outdoor shower? State of the art (if by “state of the art” you mean “functional, sort of”) I was learning the off-grid life, fast. And I won’t sugarcoat it ~ it was tough.

Meanwhile, life threw another curveball. Our son in WA found himself homeless, sleeping in his car. We offered to bring him “home” ~ our caravan ~ but…….

1. No room at the inn.

2. What young person wants to live that primitive anyway?

So while Wick flew back west to help him through it, I was on the hunt for somewhere that could house us all. Out of sheer hope (and a little desperation) I put an ad out on Nimbin Hookups.

Enter serendipity. A woman from Tuntable Falls Community reached out ~ she had a place.

When I came to see it, I knew. A hobbit home. A fairy home. A pixie home made of stone and cobble, tucked right into the mountain, rainforest wrapped around it like a guardian. Outdoor shower, composting toilet, two bedrooms, magic humming through the walls. I fell in love ♡

I moved in that week. Wick, with son in tow, flew back not long after and driving them “home” felt safe. It felt right. This wasn’t just a shack in the rainforest. It was community. It was Nimbin ♡

And that’s how we landed here. No mistake. No coincidence. Just listening when the universe whispers: This is where you’re meant to be ♡
