When some humans hear “youth work”, they often imagine crisis.
Trouble.
Chaos.
Something heavy or a bit scary.
Sure, there are parts of it that are hard! But at its core, youth work is surprisingly simple.
After all the courses. The frameworks. The action plans with very official names.
This is what I’ve learned: Humans just want to be seen. Heard. Taken seriously. And cared for ~ without judgement.
Most of the fancy stuff falls away the moment you sit down with a young person and actually listen. Not to fix. Not to lecture. Just to be present.
And when trust is earned ~ that is such an honour. It’s not something I ever take lightly. I always want to be sincere in my dealings, because trust is fragile and once given, it deserves care.
Youth work isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about making space for the story to come out when it’s ready. Sometimes sideways. Sometimes through humour. Sometimes through silence.
At Nimbin Youth, a lot of the work looks like ordinary moments. Hanging out. Sharing food. Talking about music, life, or nothing at all. And then ~ quietly ~ the real stuff shows up.
That’s when connection happens.
If you’re doing this work right, it doesn’t feel dramatic. It feels human. It feels like sitting alongside someone rather than standing over them.
There’s a quote I love: People don’t remember what you said or what you did ~ they remember how you made them feel.
And the beautiful part? The young people teach me too. Every day. They teach me how to be a better human. They remind me why showing up matters, like really matters! not because I have to, but because I genuinely want to ♡
It’s not about control or correction. It’s about connection.
It’s about showing young people that there is at least one place in the world where they don’t have to perform, explain, or prove anything to belong.
I love this work. The stories. The laughs. The tough conversations. The small wins that don’t make headlines but change lives anyway.
Youth work isn’t scary.
What’s scary is young people going through hard things alone.
And I’m so grateful ~ every day ~ that I get to be part of making sure they don’t have to ♡
Love Rain xx
